Thermography - Avoid Unplanned Outages and Shutdowns.

What is Thermography?  Thermal Imaging, or infrared thermography, graphically displays the thermal, or heat energy that is radiated by and object.
Thermal imaging is the technique that measures the infrared radiation emitted from a surface.

The infrared thermal camera provides the means to evaluate and convert this energy into meaningful data, temperatures. Components in various states of failure will emit more thermal radiation as a direct result of more energy being dissipated into the components. This additional energy is usually increased friction in mechanical devices or higher resistance in electrical devices.

What We Do.....  Our trained thermographers utilize a Thermal Trend Infrared Database to manage all inspections, collect and review data and generate reports. The system manages the inspection scheduling, equipment inventory, problem trends and repair reconciliation. Once on-site we first inventory and scan all equipment to be inspected.

Information on any problems are observed and verification of the test status of each piece of equipment is entered directly into the database during the inspection. When the inspection is complete, the information is synchronized on a desktop computer for report generation
.

Electrical..... "Abnormal heating is associated with possible failure."

Contact Problems: Heating is produced by current flow through a contact with higher than normal electrical resistance. This type of problem is typically associated with switch contacts and connectors. The actual point of heating may often begin very small and continue to expand until it becomes a serious defect. Thermography will easily identify such thermal problems and provide the information to correct the problems before they become a failure or fire.

Electrical Distribution: Literally hundreds of different components make up an electrical system. These components relate to transformers, switchgear, breakers, meters, local power distribution panels, appliance panels, and PDUs. Utilizing the Thermography Predictive Maintenance Program will help to reduce impending electrical problems thus saving on costly down time and wasted energy that is dissipated as heat.
Utility..... Infrared imaging and temperature analysis have become a necessity to efficiently and accurately monitor substations, transmission lines, power connections, and other transmission equipment. With the Thermography Program, we are able to diagnose potential problems before they become catastrophic, saving significant dollars on extensive repairs and down time. Utility companies utilizing the Thermography Program will be able to increase system reliability, conserve costs, and SAVE money.

Mechanical..... "Abnormal heating is associated with possible failure."
In all commercial and industrial plants there is a diverse collection of different equipment that can be successfully inspected using the Thermography Predictive Maintenance Program. For most mechanical equipment the techniques used to inspect the equipment are straight forward, but some specific knowledge and experience may be required. Basically, the technician doing the inspection should have a basic understanding in the operation of the system being inspected and the heat flow characteristics. The Technician should also understand heat related failure mechanisms, have safety inspection procedures and observe the machinery during startup and cool down as well as normal operation. With this information in hand along with the past thermal inspection images the technician will be able to accurately assess any problems that may be developing with the system.

Thermography has been successfully used to identify heat problems such as misalignments in rotating equipment, pulleys and drive belts, high bearing and oil temperatures, anomalies in HVAC, boiler and chiller units just to name a few applications.
Process..... In order to maintain peak performance of equipment used within the processing industry, a preventative maintenance program in essential. The PSC Thermography Predictive Maintenance Program will provide the knowledge needed to be able to operate at optimum performance. The Thermal Program can assist in identifying issues such as the conveyor belt "hot spots", or de-lamination, frozen bearings, or heat fluctuations in drying furnaces, Basically, the Identification of potential problems is endless.
Building Envelope..... The primary diagnostic procedure for determining the thermal performance of a building envelop is infrared thermography. It can be used to identify heating and cooling losses due to poor construction, missing or inadequate insulation and moisture intrusion. Correcting these types of defects plays a significant role in increasing building efficiency and structural integrity. Thermography can help identify surface temperature variations of the building envelop, that relates to problems in the structure, thermal bridging, moisture content and air leakage. Two primary mechanisms for heat loss in buildings are conduction losses through the walls and air leakage. Both can be accurately identified from the surface of the building by utilizing infrared thermography. Early correction of these problems can be made before extensive damage occurs.

The Value of Infrared Predictive Inspection Programs:

  • Locate failures before they happen.
  • Verify New Equipment installations and establish baselines for future inspections.
  • Potential problems are tracked and trend identified.
  • Get easy to understand reports with thermographic images with temperature information.
